Where costs are actually entered
The product list, Quick Edit and Bulk Edit — taken over, made safe, and made fast.
- *Cost / Margin* — the cost and the margin it implies, coloured against a target the shop sets. Variable products show the span their variations cover and how many still need a cost.
- *Sales / Profit* — units, revenue and profit over the last 90 days, flagged when the profit stands on uncosted lines.
- Sorting by cost keeps the products that have none, ordered last. The obvious implementation hides them — which is exactly the set someone sorting by cost is looking for.
- Three database queries for the whole page regardless of length, enforced by a test.
- WooCommerce's own Cost column is replaced rather than duplicated.
- Quick Edit and Bulk Edit go through the plugin's cost service, so each edit is recorded with who changed it, when, and where the figure came from.
- A blank field no longer deletes the cost. A hidden companion field says whether the value shown was real.
- A value that is not a number is refused rather than stored as zero — which every report would otherwise read as a 100% margin.
- Six bulk modes: change to, increase by, decrease by — each as an amount or a percentage.
- Products with no cost are skipped by the four relative modes, and the next page load says how many were skipped and what to do instead.
- Everything rounds to the shop's own money precision, so running the same edit twice changes nothing the second time.
A reporting product lives or dies on whether the data ever gets entered. Most of the work on this screen is about removing the reasons someone stops halfway.
The blank-field bug is the clearest example. It is not a bug anyone would notice until a month of costs had quietly gone to nothing — by which point the cause is three weeks behind the symptom.
