A round trip that survives the software the shop actually uses, with a preview that counts honestly.
- Variations are included — that is where costs actually live. Drafts too: a product being prepared for launch needs a cost before it sells, not after.
- The separator matches what the shop's own spreadsheet will hand back. A shop whose decimals use a comma gets semicolons, because that is what its Excel saves.
- Each row carries its own cost, not the one it inherits, so re-importing cannot accidentally end a variable product's inheritance.
- The preview counts honestly: 12 new, 3 changed, 480 unchanged, 2 with a problem — every row and every problem numbered by its line in the file.
- Matching is verified both ways. A SKU that matches nothing is an error, not a silent fall back to the id. A SKU and id that disagree is an error, not a guess.
- A blank cost cell leaves that product alone — the export writes blanks for uncosted products, so blank-means-clear would turn every round trip into a request to delete everything.
- The commit re-reads each cost first: changed in another tab since the preview, and it is reported as a conflict rather than overwritten.
- Upload validation: error code, real-upload check, size cap, file type, separator detection, header validation naming the columns it wanted, row cap.
The separator detail sounds pedantic and is not. A shop whose locale uses a comma for decimals gets semicolon-separated files, because that is what its Excel writes back. Without it, the advertised round trip breaks on the first save — and it breaks on the customer’s machine, not on the developer’s.
